I don't have much jambalaya making experience and I am not a big fan of spicy creole food. Nonetheless, I think this sounds really good. I love that it has shrimp!
I think I am going to add in some chicken or turkey sausage instead of ham. Some Food Network reviews also said it was a bit bland, so if you like your food spicy you may want to consider amping up the spice.
Happy Jambalaya Cooking!

I made this last weekend, using turkey kielbasa in place of ham, and Ryan and I were both pretty happy with it. My only complaint is that, for whatever reason, my rice would not cook all the way. Even after cooking it much longer than suggested by either the recipe or my bag of rice, the rice was still chewy in spots :(
ReplyDeleteIm making this now and it smells fabulous! Im using andoille sausage in place of the ham, so hopefully the saugage will add some flavor and some HEAT!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip about the sausage in place of ham! Don't know why I didn't think of that!
ReplyDeleteWell the verdict is in and I thought this was fabulous jumbalaya (granted, the only other jambalya I have ever made was out of a Zattaran's box and really just doesn't compare). While the sausage probably killed whatever healthy factor this had, it added a nice heat and tons of flavor!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a dutch oven, does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of pot this would cook best in?
ReplyDeleteI made this tonight and it was really tasty. I doubled all the spices except the cayenne and I used smoked paprika because I didn't have any regular. Yum!
ReplyDeleteTessa, use the hugest sauce pan you have, or whatever pot you boil spaghetti in. Or, if you have one of those deep saute pots, that would be great, too.
ReplyDeleteThis was a great dish. I used Cajun seasoning in place of the cayenne and a little more than called for. As for the ham, I subbed Vegetarian Pepperoni (cut really, really small so the meateaters wouldn't notice it).
ReplyDeleteJust the right amount of heat and heaps of flavor.
We don't eat pork so will have to substitute something for the ham.
ReplyDeleteThis was really yummy!!! I detest ham, so I substituted beef hot links instead. Also, I ramped up the spices and I cooked the rice on it's own. Overall, we really liked this dish once we adjusted it to suit our tastes. This is a keeper!
ReplyDeleteWe loved this!

I had planned to opt out, but decided to make it at the last minute using ground turkey. It's phenomenal! Yay!
